3-Day Austria Escape: Salzburg, Hallstatt, Vienna

Are you ready for an enchanting journey through the heart of Europe? Austria, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and charming cities, is a destination that should be at the top of every traveler’s bucket list. Recently, we embarked on a whirlwind adventure through this beautiful country, exploring three of its most captivating cities: Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Vienna. With just one full day in each city, we made the most of our time, and now, we’re here to share our unforgettable itinerary with you — our 3-Day Austria Escape: Salzburg, Hallstatt, Vienna.

Our journey to Austria actually started in Budapest, Hungary, where we hopped on a Euro train to Salzburg. This showcases the incredible convenience of traveling within Europe, where a single train ride can seamlessly transport you across multiple countries, highlighting the ease of the Euro train system! 😉

Day 1: Salzburg – The City of Mozart and Miracles

Morning:

Start your day in Salzburg with a visit to the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, one of the famous spots where the iconic movie “The Sound of Music” was filmed. As you step into this enchanting setting, you’ll be greeted by the meticulously landscaped gardens and the breathtaking baroque architecture of the palace. Stroll through the immaculate gardens, where scenes from the film came to life, and soak in the beauty that has captured the hearts of visitors for generations.

Late Morning:

Next, head to Hohensalzburg Fortress for a captivating journey into Salzburg’s past. You can take the funicular to the top for panoramic views of the city and the stunning Alps. Don’t forget to explore the fortress’s rich history in its museums and courtyards. Alternatively, you can also visit Winkler Terrace (which we actually opted to do instead), located on the Mönchsberg. This serene spot offers equally breathtaking views and can be reached by taking the scenic ride up the Mönchsberg Lift. It’s a fantastic way to appreciate Salzburg’s beauty from a different vantage point and immerse yourself in the city’s history and natural splendor.

Lunch:

Enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine at a local restaurant. For this, we recommend dining at Stiegl-Keller. This historic restaurant offers a warm and cozy atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to enjoy traditional dishes. Start with a hearty bowl of goulash soup, followed by the iconic Wiener Schnitzel, a crispy veal or pork cutlet. Don’t forget to end your meal on a sweet note with a slice of apple strudel, a classic Austrian dessert. Pair your meal with a local Stiegl beer for the full Austrian culinary experience. Stiegl-Keller combines delicious food, a charming setting, and warm Austrian hospitality for a memorable dining experience in Salzburg.
